This essay requires you to respond to a reading from our required textbook, The Norton Reader. Note that you will need to create a Turnitin.com account, if you did not already do so, to submit your essay. The information you need to do that is in the prompt for essay 1.
If you’re having any issues with Turnitin.com that make you unable to upload it, you may email me the essay as a PDF or DOC/DOCX file. If you don’t know how to create either of those file types, you may copy and paste the assignment into an email. Links to documents on the cloud, such as Google Docs, will not be accepted, nor will Apple PAGES files. Be aware that if you email me the essay, you’ll still need to set up your Turnitin account before I can upload the assignment for you and grade it.
English 101 Final essay (750 word minimum)
Nicholas Carr in “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” and Jean M. Twenge in “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?” suggest that technological advances can have negative as well as positive effects on their users. Pick ONE of these articles, explain why the author thinks the pros of the technology he or she writes about outweigh the cons or vice versa, and explain why you agree or disagree with the author’s opinion.
Tips for students:
– There is no right answer when you give your own perspective. It’s good if you can see both sides of the issue, but your essay will be more successful if you get off the fence and have a clear point to make.
– Don’t try to cover lots of different points. Express a main point in a clear, specific thesis statement, and spend the rest of the essay supporting your thesis.
– You don’t have to agree with the author, but you need to show that you understand what the author is saying. Address the main ideas the author examines in the text, and give details and examples from the text to support your points. Include and comment on relevant quotes to help make your case.
– This assignment should be done individually. If you use any material from an outside source, it must be cited along with proper use of quotation marks to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism will result in a failing grade for the assignment with no possibility to make up the points.
– Because this is an exam, you won’t be able to show the instructor a thesis or rough draft to get feedback. Feel free to email the instructor with general questions if the prompt isn’t fully clear.
– This assignment is designed to be completed in two hours, not counting the time spent reading the texts. However, you are permitted to spend more than two hours on it if you wish.
