Find an editorial published this year (2020). You may want to look through several different editorials to find one that suits you. Use the search term “opinion” or “editorial” or “op-ed” in the news section of google and you should find something. Alternately, you can go to a specific newspaper or magazine online (USA Today, for example) and go straight to their opinion section and browse the editorials.
Assignment: Evaluate the cogency of two different argument types using the ARG conditions. In other words, evaluate the strength of two different types of argument (e.g. argument from generalization, argument from cause). Your assignment does not need to produce a diagram of the argument, but it does need to supply the following:
a) A breakdown of the three basic parts of the argument you identified (using the Toulmin Model—Data/Warrant/Claim). You can supply implicit premises if they are not in the editorial.
b) an analysis of each of the three ARG conditions for both arguments.
c) an evaluation of cogency/strength of the argument.
Requirements: You must turn in a full citation or web link for your editorial. I don’t have a word length requirement for this paper, but in general, they should be 800-1500 words long.
