This week we are going to take a break from our normal textbook and instead read a chapter entitled “Early Statehood Years,” which is borrowed from the book Tennesseans and Their History written by Paul H. Berberon, Stephen V. Ash, and Jeanette Keith (Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press, 1999, pgs. 68-91.)
The questions for this week center around how Tennessee became a state and what it was like in those first years of statehood. Particularly, what was the year, what was the process, and who were the leaders who petitioned the United States Government to add Tennessee as a new state to the newly formed Union? Did they face any problems from the U.S. government when they tried to become a state? What were the politics of the state like in the early years? What was the “public lands controversy” all about? How did the early state leaders handle the Native Americans still living in the new state? What was the economy like in the new state? Lastly, what impact did the War of 1812 have on the new state?
Remember to write in your own words (paraphrasing), but do include page numbers to cite your research from the book. You can include direct quotes from the textbook, but these should be short. I mostly need to read your work.
Be sure to reference the “Rubric of Discussion Board Postings” that I have posted on the Content page! Also, you will have more opportunity to respond to your fellow classmates later this week when I post Part II of this week’s discussion.
