Im so sorry, my professor is crazy and has weird dumb rules
Seventeen Rules of Good Grammar, Punctuation, and Syntax You Must Obey
in Writing Submitted for Credit in this Course
AVOID overuse use of the passive voice. For example, “The book was written by . ..” “The play was seen by . . .” “Talent is thought to be inherited but . . . ” “The plot was considered to be ineffective. . . .” “The actors were chosen by the director, who . . .” “Hamlet has been done thousands of time by . . .” “The Book of Mormon was praised by critics as the greatest musical since . . .”
ALWAYS use personal pronouns in relative clauses which refer to persons in the main clause. For example “actors that appeared in the 1870s . . .” is incorrect. So is “He was a playwright that was often performed . . .” etc.
AVOID homonyms: know the difference between “its” and “it’s”, “there” and “their,” “passed” and “past,” “ought” and “aught,” “led” and “lead,” “peak” and “pique,” “add tribute” and “attribute,” “principle” and “principal,” “capital” and “capitol,” “cede” and “seed,” “serial” and “cereal,” “died” and “dyed,” “leech and “leach,” “cue” and “queue, ” “capitol” and “capital,” along with hundreds of others.
ALWAYS write in complete sentences.
AVOID malapropisms: do not write “suppository” when you mean “repository;” do not write “predicate” when you mean “predict;” “incredulous” when you mean “incredible;” “derangement” when you mean “arrangement;” “subtractors” when you mean “detractors;” “orifice” when you mean “orison;” “lechery” when you mean “lethargy,” “discussed” when you mean “disgust,” and dozens of others.
MAKE SURE all nouns and pronouns in a sentence agree in both number and gender. For example, “A student should do their homework” is incorrect. So is “An actress must learn their lines.”
AVOID using demonstrative adjectives (this, that, these, or those) as pronouns; use the specific nouns instead. For example, “The reason for this was his need for revenge” is incorrect. Instead, write “The reason for this action was his need for revenge.”
NEVER dangle prepositions at the end of any sentence, e.g. “It was the worst performance anybody in France had ever heard of,” or “A Doll’s House was the last production they went to,” or “Here at once am I, several stories high, knowing I’m on the street where you live at.”
AVOID using the subjunctive mood (could, should, would, etc.) instead of the past tense. For example: “In later years he would learn to use the talent he developed in school.”
NEVER use single quotation marks anywhere in your essays unless those single quotation marks fall within another quote.
NEVER use goofy prepositional structures like “off of,” as in “the movie was based off of a book by . . .” or “He based his theories off of the idea that . . .”
NEVER end a sentence with a preposition.
NEVER split infinitives, e.g. “to boldly go where no man has gone before . . .” or “to fully understand the meaning of his ideas, we drink lots of whiskey or gin. . .” or “to radically change the way theatre was produced, women were permitted . . .” etc.
NEVER use the word “issue” except as a verb or as it may refer to a newspaper. Nobody has “health issues,” there are no such things as “technical issues,”
NEVER use nouns as verbs, for example “to impact,” “to transition,” “to task,” “to trend,” etc.
NEVER use the present participle in place of a verb. “He was angry, the reason being some idiot spilled hot coffee on his lap” is incorrect.
NEVER begin sentences with an adverb or other qualifier, e.g. “However, he saw that she was stark naked as the light began to . . .” “Additionally, the author regards theatre as a waste of . . .” etc.
REVIEW your knowledge of how to use the comma (,) the semicolon (;) the colon(:), and the ellipsis (. . . ).
