General Writing Workshop Questions
1. Discuss at least 2 aspects that you liked or found particularly effective about the paper and WHY you liked them.
2. Can you readily locate the thesis or focus of the essay? What is it? (you may summarize if it is implied). And does the essays stick with that one focus?
3. Does the introduction intrigue and make you want to read further? Do you learn what the author is going to be discussing? Does it seem to get off track? Are there too many questions? Is it too general? Make specific suggestions for improving the introduction.
4. Is the essay organized? Can you follow it easily? Discuss any problems you had. Look for sentences or quotes or even whole paragraphs that don’t seem to belong where the author put them. Consider our Problem/Solution outline when looking at this. Does it fit the problem/solution organizational structure? How could the organization be improved?
5. Does the essay use enough examples to support what it’s saying? What’s missing? Does the essay use evidence effectively? How so or how not?
6. How far beyond the obvious does the author go in his/her reasoning and critical thinking? Any suggestions? Did they miss anything? (open-ended questions would be good here).
7. Summarize what you consider to be the 3 most important things to work on.
