Like in other academic writing, this review should feature an introduction, main body, and conclusion. As in most professional writing, avoid using first and second person pronouns (I, me, my, you, etc.). Avoid pejorative comments such as “I hated this passage” or “this passage has no historical or cultural value.” Such statements are inappropriate in academic writing.

STRUCTURE
A journal article review IS NOT A REPORT. Rather, a review will analyze the author’s thesis and main argument, the sources and methodology, and the organization and presentation of evidence. A good review demonstrates that the reviewer has read the article and thought about it in a critical/analytical manner. While your review will feature a brief summary of the article’s contents, this should not be the sole focus or even the majority of your review.

Introduction
The introduction should capture the reader’s attention and make them want to read your review in its entirety. Your introduction must feature the following:

A brief outline of the topic covered (what is the article about?)
The author’s thesis/main argument (what is the author arguing?)
Body Paragraphs
The body paragraphs should include the bulk of your review of the article. Here is where you will discuss how the author proves their arguments. When writing your body paragraphs consider the following questions:

What are the author’s main points?
What evidence do they offer as proof that their argument is correct?
What kind of sources does the author use as evidence for their argument?
Which point(s) best supports the author’s argument? Why?
What point do you find the least convincing/compelling? Why?
Other points consider when writing body paragraphs include:
Do not summarize each paragraph or article section. Remember, this is a review, not a report.
You may cite/quote brief sections of the article to support your review of it. If you do so, you must cite it properly.
Do not abuse citations to shorten the length of your paper. The majority of your paper must be your own words.
Also, do not abuse quotations. Direct quotations should be brief and relevant to your review.
Any quotes must utilize parenthetical citations. When citing a source, include the author’s name and the page number you are citing. For citations, write (Author’s name, XX) at the end of your sentence, where XX is the specific page number.
Do not use outside sources. This includes your textbook and other sources. Your review should be on this article alone.
Conclusion
End your review by offering your personal critique or opinion on the article. This, however, does not mean using first person pronouns. Do not use phrases such as “I think,” “I believe,” or “my opinion is.” Convey your thoughts with stronger, more direct language.

Do not say whether or not you thought the article was exciting or boring. I expect that you may find some material uninteresting. Many historians and other scholars feel the same way when they read some sources and research.

When forming your opinion, consider questions such as:
What were the strengths and weaknesses of the author’s argument?
Do they provide sufficient support/evidence to support their thesis?
Is the argument presented in a logical way? Does the article’s structure help or hinder their thesis? How?
Is their evidence convincing/compelling? Why or why not?
Are you convinced by the author? Is their argument convincing? Why or why not?
