THERE ARE NO OUTSIDE SOURCES ALLOWED. THIS ESSAY IS BASED ON THE READING I PROVIDE AND THE SLIDES. NO IN SOURCE CITATIONS REQUIRED. 1500 WORDS. SINCE IT IS ON LOCKE AND INNATE IDEAS, IT IS ONLY BASED ON BOOK 1 CHAPTERS 1 AND 2. I HAVE DONE THE OUTLINE BUT IT NEEDS TO BE EDITED AFTER RECEIVING FEEDBACK WHICH I HAVE ATTACHED SO PLEASE EDIT IT TO MATCH THE ESSAY.
Your task now is to write the essay for which you wrote an outline for the first part of this project. Write your essay on the topic on which you wrote the outline. Be sure to take into account the feedback you received on your outline and modify your outline accordingly, if that’s what the feedback calls for.
The outline should help you write the essay. So, stick to it – and when you are finished writing a draft of your essay, go back and check if you did. If not, change the essay – or, in some cases, change the outline – so that outline and essay match!
If in the course of writing the essay, you change your mind on an issue (for example, you discover that there is a response to an objection, which you were not aware of when you wrote the outline), that’s fine. Adjust the outline accordingly, so outline and essay match.
Your essay should be around 1500 words in overall length (excluding the outline).
How does Locke argue against the view that some of our ideas are innate (nativism)? Give a detailed exposition of what you take to be the strongest argument Locke gives against nativism (among those we have considered). Next, consider how a proponent of innate ideas might defend her position against Locke’s objections. Finally, assess the debate: Is the nativist’s response convincing? Or does Locke have the stronger case? State your reasons.
Your essay will be graded in terms of how successfully it achieves each of the following four objectives.
A. Exposition (30% of overall grade)
The paper provides a clear and accurate presentation of the position or argument(s) you were asked to discuss. More specifically,
· the paper clearly states what the main claim or position is and, where necessary, explains what this claim means
· where applicable, the paper clearly explains the significance of the claim or position
· where applicable, the paper provides a clear and accurate account of the main argument for this claim (i.e., an account that makes clear what reasons are offered by the philosopher in question for believing the claim/position)
· the paper goes into as much detail regarding the arguments and ideas at issue as is needed for these arguments to be intelligible (that is, it has to become clear why someone might think that the argument in question has some minimal plausibility).
B. Critical Evaluation (30%)
The paper provides a clear and concise critical evaluation of the position/argument or, where applicable, a response on behalf of the opponent. More specifically,
· the paper clearly states whether you find the argument/position persuasive
· the paper clearly explains why, in your judgment, the argument/position is persuasive or not
– if you find the argument persuasive, your paper explains why it is persuasive. This should involve considering at least one objection and offering a response to this objection, which clearly explains why the objection does not persuade you to reject the argument
– if you do not find the argument persuasive, your essay clearly explains what the flaws in the argument are. Again, this should involve considering at least one reason for taking the argument to be persuasive and offering a response to it, which clearly explains why you are still not persuaded by the argument.
– if you believe that the argument under discussion supports, not its original conclusion, but a modified conclusion (perhaps a slightly weaker one), your paper clearly states that and explains why
B. Organization and Clarity (30%)
The paper is clearly written, well organized, and easy to follow. Specifically,
· the writing is not ambiguous or obscure
· technical terms are clearly explained
· there is no unnecessary jargon
· the paper makes clear to the reader what is going on at each point (e.g. which passage you are talking about; which claim you are discussing; whether you are saying what the main claim is or giving the argument that supports it etc.)
· the paper is broken down into paragraphs, each of which has a clear point and function in your overall paper
· your reasoning is easy to follow (e.g. no important steps are omitted or left implicit)
· a reader who has basic familiarity with Descartes or Locke can easily understand your paper
C. Spelling, Grammar, Punctuation and Style (10%)
The paper is free of spelling, grammatical and punctuation mistakes. It is written in a style appropriate for an academic paper.
