Read/review the following resources for this activity:

A Latin American film and a film from another culture

Instructions
This week you should watch a film from Latin America and compare and contrast it to a film from another culture in the same genre (e.g. contrasting The Devil’s Backbone with It).

Discuss what similarities and differences you noticed in the way the directors approached their subjects.
What does this comparison reveal about cultural differences?
Select and analyze a specific scene from both films. Discuss the way the actors approach the scene, the breakdown of lighting, sound, music, and cinematography. How does the director use the camera to tell the story including angles, pans, and cuts to the scene? What does this reveal about the styles and conventions of visual storytelling?

Many of these films explore difficult subjects including grief, revenge, and violence. Be sure to check the film rating and warnings and use your discretion in choosing what pictures you will review.

The following films are available through the Chamberlain library to watch for free, but you can also watch these films available on streaming platforms. If you have another film from Latin America you’d like to focus on in the paper you can email your instructor:
