An assertion is a strong statement that someone might disagree with or be surprised by. You will state your assertion as the thesis statement of your essay. A thesis statement is one sentence that tells the main idea of your whole essay. It is typically the last sentence of the introduction paragraph. For your topic, you can write about nearly anything that you know about from personal experience. In your essay, tell the reader how you know about the topic so that he/she will believe what you say. Narrow your topic so that you can cover it fully in 4-6 pages. Your assertion/thesis statement will be a one sentence statement about the topic that another person might disagree with or be surprised by.
