The selection of quotes for each journal should be spread throughout the entire assigned reading. For example, if there are two chapters assigned, the quotes must be taken from both chapters, not just from one. Comments should not simply explain what the quote is saying. Students need to comment on why they have chosen the quotes they chose, what impact each quote has on the way the student thinks about the good life, whether or not the student agrees or disagrees with the quote including why they agree or disagree with what the author is saying.

CONNECTION

At least ONE OF THE COMMENTS must include a specific Connection. The connection must relate to the question: “what is the Good Life?” and must connect either to material from other courses, different time periods or cultures, discussions from this course, or previously read materials for this course.

A connection needs to compare a specific point in the text to:

* a specific point in another appropriate text

* OR from our discussions in this course

* OR from another reliable source

Be specific, rather than vague. Say something like: “A is related to B because of C, D, and E.”
