Read and take notes. Inform yourself so you can respond to the term paper’s prompt by doing the readings I assigned and by answering the questions in the assignment. (You are doing this currently.) These comprise your rough notes.
From what you learned doing your research, develop a working thesis statement.
The next step is to develop the questions you need to answer in order to compose an effective paper. We provided them for you this time.
Create a skeletal outline for your paper so that you can put the appropriate information into your paper in a cohesive manner.
Using your skeleton outline, create a detailed outline of the body of your paper.

This is a critical step, as it is here where you create your road map for your paper. If you do

this right, the rest of the paper is easy. Do a poor job on this, and you and your ideas will likely get

jumbled or lost, and your paper will suffer.

a. This is where you place the answers to the questions. The order in which you place the information is up to you, but generally the questions follow a logical sequence.

b. Each question’s answer comprises a separate part of the body of the paper. Some parts may only be a paragraph in length; some may be a couple paragraphs. Remember to explain your answers and support your assertions with evidence. This is where the TCECC format – Topic Context Evidence Commentary/ Conclusion comes in handy. You need evidence – quotes, facts, data, EVIDENCE – to support what you assert.

From that outline, write the rough draft of the body of the paper, following the outline carefully.
Rewrite your body, cleaning up the language and making appropriate edits.
Finally, write your introductory and conclusion paragraphs. Be sure your thesis statement is the last sentence of the introductory paragraph.

a. First, define your terms: What are “Western secular liberal values” and “traditional Islamic values”? (You need to clearly understand the meanings of “Western,” “secular,” & “liberal,” and you need to characterize what “traditional Islamic values” are, even though one might argue that the entire Islamic world, which is diverse, can’t be reduced to a single such characterization. 2. Describe and analyze why the Islamic World and European societies (“the West”) followed divergent paths regarding the norms and rules a society should embrace (eg., individualism versus communitarianism, secular versus religious, etc). (Chapters 7, 11/12) October 30

3. What three solutions (movements) emerged in the Middle World to address the infusion/incursion of Western culture (think: “PERSIA” — politics, economics, religious social/cultural practices and beliefs, intellectual/scientific thought) into the Middle World? (See: Chapter 13) November 9

4. Can this tension be reduced? How are various Islamic countries responding to Western influences today? How effective are these responses? November 11
