Journal article summary
French RYou will write and upload a summary of one journal article. The article should be chosen from the list of journals in the syllabus and should deal with some aspect of research in second language acquisition that you are reading about and that is of interest to you. Look at the References/Bibliography in your course textbooks for ideas, if you are unsure as to the type of article you should be looking for. The articles must be no more than 20 years old. Guidelines for preparing the summary are below; you are limited to a four-page summary (12 pt. font). Make sure to use APA reference style to identify the article at the top of your document and attach a copy of the article to the submission for the professor. Be sure to insert page numbers in the submission.
Look through the abstract in the journal to get an idea of what kind of information to include as well as an idea of how specific to be. Additionally, you may want to refer to Chapter 2 in Gass for more information on SLA data. In general, your summary should touch on the following aspects of the research reported.
What was the purpose of the research? What is the significance of the problem investigated to the field second language acquisition and second language teaching if applicable? How is the study related to what you are reading for this course and to previous research or the field at large?
What was the method of research? Quantitative or qualitative?
Subjects/Informants: Who were the participants?
Materials and procedures: What was the research methodology and which instruments or data collection processes were applied?
Analyses: How were the data arranged and analyzed? You need not worry about elaborate statistical designs beyond your level of expertise. Comment on the analyses if you feel the information is necessary to the abstract.
What were the results and conclusions?
Results: Often the results section in quantitative research deals with statistics and may seem incomprehensible as it forms the technical report of what happened in the study. If so, give an overview in general terms of what was found.
Conclusions/Discussion: How did the results of the study relate to the purpose/problem? What implications/applications does the study have?
Critique
What are your impressions and thoughts about the study/article? What is the utility of the study/article to language teachers?

French Review is a journal of the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF). The French Review is published four times a year: October, December, March, and May. It is filled with French literature, cinema, culture, linguistics, and pedagody. French Review has a website (http://frenchreview.frenchteachers.org/) as well, where anyone can find copies of the Current Issue as well as older issues in Archives. There is even in many examples of lesson plans in Dossier Pédagogique.
