Key concept Examination

There is no such thing as a bad idea in the process of brainstorming. In its simplest definition, brainstorming is an activity that generates ideas to resolve a problem or an issue. Brainstorming is often correlated with learning, problem-solving, and even roleplay. Brainstorming or the creative process can be done solo or in groups. Brainstorming is linked to creativity and problem-solving. As a creative person, brainstorming is a common occurrence. I brainstorm in pursuing home improvement activities. I brainstorm for vacation ideas and social events. I brainstorm in my professional life and certainly brainstorm in my academic life. I have both a professional and personal interest in examining the key concept of brainstorming.

Textbook authors, Meredith and Shafer (2020), discuss brainstorming in the context of tools in the Six Sigma toolkit. Lean Six Sigma or Six Sigma is a process improvement program that provides a framework for continuous improvement that is data-driven. Corporations such as Motorola, General Electric, and other global giants have successfully utilized Six Sigma to increase profits and improve quality. Brainstorming is the most utilized tool in the Six Sigma toolkit (Laureani & Antony, 2018). The concept of brainstorming dates back to the 1950s with Alex Osborn. Osborn’s brainstorming work centered on the group energy that occurs when people come together to generate ideas creatively. Osborn’s early work in advertising brainstorming sessions began with open discussions around a presentation of a problem. The brainstorming process consists of four strategies. The strategies include allowing for all ideas to be welcomed without criticism. Brainstorming strategies also include the guidance of allowing for the generation of unlimited ideas and group collaboration to improve upon each other’s ideas (Meredith & Shafer, 2020).

Brainstorming is the catalyst for innovation, technology, advanced learning, medical invention, and the production of new inventions and methodologies. The concept of brainstorming provides endless possibilities. Research has proven that managers, leaders, and educators benefit from the use of ensuring that brainstorming should be one of their most-used tools.

Article Summary

A research article in the Journal of Applied and Basic Medical Research examined the use of brainstorming as both a teaching and learning tool for postgraduate biomedical students. Using brainstorming as a utility tool for postgraduate biomedical studies with coursework in complex biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, and clinical laboratory is essential for learning. It is virtually impossible and beyond most human capacity to recall all the necessary information and learning by rote learning. The pressure and weight of the knowledge needed to advance through medical skill requirements require innovative measures and techniques that are discovered through brainstorming. Existing traditional methods for postgraduate learning doesn’t provide engaging and creative learning.

Students are encouraged to be creative and grow through interactive learning, group discussion and brainstorming. Teachers who engaged in brainstorming generated new learning methods for mundane and complex subjects. Students in engaged in the research study reported feeling more empowered, engaged and in control of their own learning process. The research study proved the value of brainstorming through post-test evaluation and added value to postgraduate medical students (Goswami et al., 2017). “Brainstorming adds to the knowledge about a particular topic and also encourages “out of the box” thinking” (Goswami et al., 2017, p. 18 ).

Biblical Integration

Brainstorming and creativity are common themes in the Bible. “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up” (English Standard Version, 2001, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). Exodus 35:31-32 provides guiadance on creativity. “And he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze” (English Standard Version, 2001, Exodus 35:31-32). God has provided us the capacity to increase our knowledge and skills. Teamwork is a process that God supports and encourages us to work together. Brainstorming and working together to pursue a goal helps us rise to any challenge. Proverbs 27:17 reads, “ Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another” (English Standard Version, 2001, Proverbs 27:17).

Challenges and opportunities exist for improvement in education, healthcare, disaster planning, nursing and countless other arenas. Brainstorming is a bridge to identify gaps and create innovative ideas to lead to improvements and innovation. Creativity implies originality and provides the opportunity for the birth of ideas. Creating ideas through the process of brainstorming can be compared to the planting of seeds in a garden and watching them grow. Removing barriers and roadblocks in an optimal brainstorming session allows ideas to grow (Hassan & Hassan, 2019).

According to authors Hassan and Hassan (2019) creativity is essential to the brainstorming process. Creativity sets the stage for challenging the norm or the status quo to get to a new desired state. Brainstorming is essential to the learning process that provides unlimited potential (Hassan & Hassan, 2019). A proper brainstorming session ensures that it is a non-judgemental discussion where no bad idea is rejected. The positive and nonrestricted environment allows the space for creativity and ideas to give birth to meaningful solutions.

A research article in the Journal of Management Information Systems suggested that organizational value creation is dependent upon successful brainstorming. Collaborative brainstorming, aided by a leader providing encouragement and guidance, revealed higher group brainstorming satisfaction. The authors utilized experimental methods to explore participant feedback and the impact of post brainstorming convergence. Convergence or the group’s coming together after the completion of the brainstorming was utilized to increase subsequent brainstorming productivity (Seeber et al., 2018).

Key Concept Explanation:

“Benchmarking is a practice that uses relative performance – the ranking of entities’ performance – to identify entities with superior performance, and this entity is then considered one from which it makes sense to learn” (Buckmaster & Mouritsen, 2017, p. 232). Benchmarking will improve efficiency, quality of care, patient safety, and patient satisfaction. The process involves looking at standards, best practices and evidence-based practices and then identifying potential areas of improvement. Benchmarking is interesting to me as I work for a hospital that has a newer CEO that is comparing and trying to implement techniques to our organization that he has implemented at his previous organization. Some of these techniques may have worked at his previous organization, but comparing techniques, some may be better, while some may not benefit our hospital.

Dobrosavljević & Urošević (2018) discuss how organizations strive to know what the best business methods are to improve performance and to gain a competitive advantage, where Feibert et al. (2019) discusses the importance of how continuous improvement is an important aspect of benchmarking and that it should be a systematic process of measuring products, services, and practices against other organizations that may be considered superior. Feibert et al. (2019) and Dobrosavljević & Urošević (2018) are similar in their discussions, but Bevan et al. (2019) discusses how public benchmarking can improve poor performance at the national level through ‘naming and shaming’ and enhance good performance at the sub-national level through ‘competitive benchmarking’ and peer learning. These three authors all view benchmarking the same, but in different ways. Bevan et al. (2019) also discusses what motivates improved health care performance and how it is improving across the world.

Casto et al. (2015) discusses how benchmarks for comparison between institutions are important because it allows for identifying the causes of the differences between hospitals at the resource’s consumption, accessibility, quality, economic, and financial performance levels, while Vorhies & Morgan (2018) examine the benefits of benchmarking for business performance that are available from benchmarking the marketing capabilities of top performing firms. Vorhies & Morgan (2018) found that their results suggested that benchmarking has the potential to become a key mechanism for identifying, building, and enhancing marketing capabilities to deliver a sustainable competitive advantage.

Article Summary

Dobrosavljević & Urošević (2018) provide information on how organizations attempt to know what best business approaches can improve their performance and help them gain a competitive advantage towards other organizations. Benchmarking should be done do add value to an organization. The value added should be practices such as improving activities, processes, and management techniques. When comparing to another organization, it is important to focus and look at what their best practices are that has helped them to achieve their outstanding performance. Benchmarking does not always mean that it will produce similar results of another organization. With benchmarking, organizations should not use the same best practices of another business, but they should adapt the practices in a way that works best for the organization itself. When Benchmarking is used, it can make change within an organization more effective. Benchmarking is a continuous process of improvement to help organizations for continuously learning. When comparing to another organization, recognizing and understanding their best learning practices will help guide the organization that is performing the benchmarking to better understand what changes will need to be looked at, and how to attempt to make these changes. When benchmarking, there are some key factors that need to be recognized and in place to be able to support a successful implementation. Some of these factors are to identify the driver for change, what key processes and variables influence performance, and having support from senior management.

Biblical Integration

2 Corinthians 10:12 (English Standard Version) states “Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.” This verse highlights the importance of how benchmarking is to be used to help gain a better knowledge and understanding when comparing to another organization. 2 Corinthians 13:5 (English Standard Version) states “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!” while Galatians 5:26 (English Standard Version) states “Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.” These verses highlight the importance of how benchmarking is important to help an organization to improve, and not to boast from the success of it.

Benchmarking is important for FirstHealth of the Carolinas as it will benefit the organization operationally. Benchmarking can help FirstHealth determine if it has the appropriate number of employees for a specific job or department and can help to determine if they are giving the appropriate pay ranges to their employees. As FirstHealth continuously grows as an organization, benchmarking also has helped FirstHealth to be able to make sure that departments have the appropriate equipment to perform certain procedures. FirstHealth continues to grow with the cancer care that is given, so benchmarking has helped FirstHealth of the Carolinas see that a comprehensive cancer center needs to be built so that the organization will be able to keep expanding with the care that is provided.
