Scenario

You and your favorite nephew, Ted, are heading out on a 2-month vacation and plan to visit five destinations. As much as you love Ted, you know that he also has a love of graffiti. He has been caught “decorating” walls of businesses and other “blank canvases.” Before you leave on your great adventure, you want to make sure he understands that he cannot get into any kind of trouble in these locations. You are going to very different countries, and each may have a very different process from the one that you both know in the U.S.

Your itinerary includes:

Sightseeing in Toronto, Canada
Visiting famous museums and shopping in Barcelona, Spain
Visiting the Middle Eastern country of Yemen
Exploring Shanghai, China
Visiting the Arizona portion of the Navajo Nation reservation.

For this assignment, you will complete two parts:

Part 1: Chart. Identify and explain the five destinations and where they fit in with the five families of law. Download the chart template and fill it out with relevant information for each cell.

Part 2: Essay. Research three of the five destinations that you will visit with some detail. (You get to choose which three). Then write a roughly 3-page essay (600–700 words) addressing the scenario. In your essay, for each of the selected destinations, you must address the following:

Identify the family of law followed by this nation/state.
Identify what the crime would be. Explain the general criminal process that would occur in this country dealing with the crime of vandalism (or intentionally damaging property, whatever the crime may be called). Specifically, what type of legal proceedings could you expect in this country (and/or family of law)? What type of punishment might be applied if Ted were convicted of the charge?
Evaluate each country’s legal system and the ethics associated with their conflict resolution processes. Are the processes ethical? Are they supported by the values of the community? Do these processes lead to fair outcomes? Why or why not? Explain your answer.

This paper will require outside research. Please include at least three sources in addition to the textbook to support your paper.

In addition to fulfilling the specifics of the assignment, a successful essay must also meet the following criteria:

Part 1 – Fill out each cell of the chart; should be about 500 words (excluding references).
Part 2 should be roughly 3 pages (approximately 600–700 words), excluding the title page and references.
Viewpoint and purpose should be clearly established and sustained.
Assignment should follow the conventions of Standard English (correct grammar, punctuation, etc.).
Writing should be well ordered, logical, and unified, as well as original and insightful.
Your work should display superior content, organization, style, and mechanics.
Appropriate citation style should be followed (Bluebook or APA).
