Personal Introductions
Welcome Everyone,
After you read my welcome here, please introduce yourself.
I provide a different introduction, and a glimpse of why I teach, on the second page of the first orientation module.
As another way to share some things with you, I made up and then answered some questions. You can use my questions as prompts if you feel stuck, but there is no need to do so. You may prefer a short autobiographical essay as I did earlier, or who knows, maybe you will surprise us.
What is something about me that most people are surprised to find out?
I worked for four years on oil rigs on the North Sea. They were a hundred miles off the coasts of Scotland and Norway, and so I had a seafaring lifestyle for a while.
What is my favorite music?
I love the rock and roll I was raised on. I love jam bands. My favorite bands include The Grateful Dead, Phil Lesh and Friends, U2, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I know this dates me a bit, even quite a bit.
What is on my bucket list?
I want to visit all 50 states and see a concert in each one. I want to see some of the great outdoor concert venues. The last one I checked off my list was Red Rocks in Colorado.
One cool thing I was able to check off on my bucket list already was fulfilling a fantasy I had. I wanted to work into an airport and buy a ticket for the very next plane to leave, having no idea beforehand where it was going. I ended up in Spain for a week.
What is one of my favorite indulgences?
I love massages. The longer the better.
What is my favorite geographical area?
I love the ocean, but I love mountains too. This is why Big Sur is one of my favorite places.
What was my favorite country to visit so far?
Probably Italy, where I got to travel around quite a bit with a friend I have had since the first grade. Although a close second is the month I spent on Crete, one of the beautiful Greek islands.
What are some enjoyable pastimes?
Eating (I love almost all food), reading and watching movies.
What is the most spontaneous things I have ever done?
Getting married. I told my family I would marry my wife one week after meeting her, even though up to that point I was a committed bachelor and wanted nothing to do with marriage. I told my wife after two weeks and she laughed…but here we are all of these years later.
What is one of my proudest moments?
When I realized, only when my step-son was 30 years old, that he had never yelled at me in anger or told me to butt out because “you are not my father.”
What is one of my fantasies?
If I am able to retire someday, I would love to live on an exotic island, perhaps far away — I have Bali on my radar.
What are two regrets I have from my childhood and education?
I wish I had learned a second language and I wish I had learned to play a musical instrument. However, I seem to have no capacity for either.
What is one of my big fears?
Heights. I am deathly afraid of heights and can barely make myself look over the rail of the Golden Gate bridge. I am pretty much an introvert, and I like to spend a lot of my time alone.
What do I think of as a relaxing day?
One of my very favorite things is sitting by a pool, warm in the sun, reading.

Guidelines for Posting Introductions
Submit your Personal Introduction (by 11:00 PM Thursday, July 9th)
Submit your two peer exchanges (by 11:00 PM Saturday, July 11th).
The essays, including your Personal Introduction, are designed to be meaningful exercises of self-exploration (reflections) rather than busy work (summaries). For example, a summary might list what you achieved, while a reflection would lean more in the direction how did you become the person you are today?
The practice of philosophy is a major goal of your essays and exchanges. This practice promotes and supports independent, creative and original thinking.
Personal Introductions
Your introduction needs to be a thoughtful “journal-like” reflection on who you are.
A good reflection is one that I could not have read before. This is because it is the essay that only you could have written — due to your unique set of life experiences.
Two Peer Exchanges
1) You respond to a peer’s essay and 2) you reply to a peer who responded to your essay.
Both peer exchanges must be more than 200 words each to be eligible to receive credit.
From the due date of your essay (11:00 PM Mondays and Thursdays), you have two days to complete your peer exchanges (11:00 PM Wednesdays and Saturdays).
If your essay does not receive a response that you can reply to by 11:00 AM on Wednesdays or Saturdays, you no longer need to wait. Instead, you write a second response to a different classmate.
Minimum Requirements
Your introduction must be more than 500 words to receive credit and be eligible for an A.
Your assignments are not eligible for A’s if they require proofreading.
Assignments that are partial (not meeting minimum requirements) do not receive partial credit.
I am from China and this is the second year for me studying at US.
