Purpose: This exercise is designed to provide practice for reading and thinking about primary documents and their meaning. By writing an essay on Ida B. Wells’ “Lynch Law in America,” students will familiarize themselves with methods of interpretation of historical documents and engage in the analysis of the relevance of the document in relationship to the history of American race relations, and will continue to also craft critical thinking and academic essay writing skills. Instructions: First, read Ida B. Wells’ “Lynch Law in America,” and consider her purpose in writing the piece. Then, construct an essay in which you analyze the document. Primary document analysis papers should adhere to the format of formal academic essays. Begin with an introduction that briefly describes the document, and ends with your thesis. Your thesis should explain what Wells is trying to accomplish in the document, and should identify the methods by which Wells attempts to make her argument persuasive. Some potential methods or techniques to consider: • Use of language (strong language, patriotic language, etc) • Imagery • Historical comparisons • Statistics • The way the piece is structured Your body paragraphs should build upon your thesis by providing specific, concrete examples that back up your argument. Use direct quotations from the document as evidence, and cite them parenthetically with the page number of the document. The essay should end with a conclusion.
