Malaysian speech habit outline workshop
Prepare for our Argument Workshop (next class) by Outlining the basic ingredients of your body paragraphs. Remember – this is an INFORMAL writing assignment, so notes, bullet points, abbreviations, etc. are all OK =)
Each body paragraph should FOCUS on one subtopic
this will be the TYPE of language habit you will focus on in that paragraph
the category should try to use course vocab like ‘slang,’ ‘metaphor,’ ‘noun-phrase,’ ‘verb-phrase,’ ‘evaluation,’ ‘colloquialism,’ ‘set-phrase,’ ‘standard syntax,’ ‘modified syntax,’ etc…
if you have a more ‘informal’ category name, please share it too… and use that idea as the link for your analysis
Brainstorm your Critique of whether that habit is good/bad, or how it impacts world-view and perspectives or opinions
In your essay, your topic sentences will be Critique Statements about the impact of each Subtopic of Language Habit on your Speech Community
You should include 5+ RELEVANT examples of the focus language habit for each paragraph
the examples should be relevant to BOTH the category you are focusing on AND the critique you are making
if you want to emphasize the negatives, then choose examples that illustrate negativity, but if you want to emphasize positives, then choose examples that illustrate positivity
if your critique is that the habits emphasize techno-centrism, or that they build an unrealistic vision of ‘success,’ or whatever perspective you’re linking to, then make sure your examples illustrate that perspective
your examples should be presented in a chart or table format
one column should show the word / phrase
one column should show the literal / denotative meaning
one column should show the contextual / useful meaning
Brainstorm an Analysis Statement about how the kinds of language use in each subtopic might impact the world-view, perspectives, concerns, values, impressions, perceptions, assumptions, etc. of the speech community.
try to link your analysis to quotes, claims, or keywords from secondary sources…
at least try to mention which source you might link to.
