MEMO For Final Project

Submit a memo proposing a topic for your formal report. This memo is your request to me (as the instructor of this class) for approval of a career-related topic that you have selected.

The memo should be in correct format throughout (refer to the Guffey textbook for memo format) and the content of the memo should give me the information that I need to feel confident that you can do the job and that I should approve your topic.

Your memo must have the correct memo headings, and a clear Introductory Paragraph preceding the memo’s Body information. The memo must also have a Closing Paragraph.

The Opening Paragraph of this memo must answer these two questions: WHAT am I holding and WHY am I holding it?

The Body of the memo must fully address the following SIX major questions:

AUDIENCE: Who will your hypothetical readers be? (ex family members, or fellow majors)

OBJECTIVE: What do you want your readers to know or believe after having read your report? Essentially, I want to know the specific purpose of your report (ie – what do you want your audience to understand after having read this report).

SUBJECT: What do you plan to investigate? What career-related ideas/ elements will you be researching, then comparing? Be as specific as possible at this point since you are presenting the specific final project topic here (for example, if you will be comparing three potential law schools to attend, then state the schools themselves, such as Northwestern Law School vs UW- Madison’s Law School vs Marquette University’s Law School)

SCOPE: What are your five to six specific and measurable criteria by which you’ll compare each subject? Specifically, when researching and comparing your career-related ideas/ elements, what will be some of the criteria for comparison (ex cost of the program, job placement numbers of the program, location of the program relative to your hometown, etc)?

SCHEDULE: What activities, tasks, or goals will you need to accomplish to meet the schedule you must follow? Here, I would like to see a preliminary schedule of at least four significant due dates (ex Research completed by October 15, Outline completed by October 25, etc)

SOURCES: Where do you expect to get your information? Here, please list at least two specific sources you plan on including in your research.

In a Concluding Paragraph, indicate your willingness to discuss your proposal and to keep in touch with me. Once you are able to get my topic approval, there can be no changes to your final project research topic unless expressly approved by me.
