Mercury (highly toxic metal) release in water

In this assignment, you will choose a pollution issue, review the primary literature and write a report to decision makers describing key information essential to convincing them there is a problem and that we know enough to design programs to mitigate the problem in a logical manner (i.e., we know how and where to intervene). If we don’t know enough, you must thoroughly describe the information gaps so that monitoring and research programs can be designed to collect the missing information.

Your assignment should be length double spaced plus a reference list with at least 15 references. You may use downloadable reports from websites but information on the web pages should not be cited. Google Scholar is an excellent search engine for scholarly papers.

THESE ARE THE SUBHEADINGS TO THE REPORT

1. Identify the pollutant – what is it?
2. Define its chemical properties – Is it soluble? Insoluble? Volatile? Organic? Inorganic?

3. Describe its ecological impacts, i.e., why it is considered a problem. Does it affect survival? Does it affect reproduction? Is it toxic? If so, describe its acute and chronic toxicity?

4. Describe the source and movement of the pollutant: where it comes from and how it moves through the environment.

5. Who uses/releases the pollutant? Why is it used? How much is used?
6. Can processes be modified so less is discharged to the environment?
7. Is the pollutant currently controlled by legislation (regulated) in Ontario or Canada in any way? 8. Describe any critical information gaps.
9. Conclusions
