Why do people commit crimes? What is your theory on this? In the U.S., how do we define who is a criminal and who is not? In a White society, how does whiteness impact our perceptions for who is a criminal (most likely to commit crimes) and who is not? Do you agree with the current status quo in the U.S. for how we predict who is likely to be a criminal? Why or why not? Be sure to provide examples and share your lived experiences that set foundation for your response.
Students can view this midterm question through a larger cultural, racial and socioeconomic lens or in other personal lenses in however students choose to view and express themselves. Students will have this midterm to think about what is going on in contemporary society in connection to historical context and convey your perspectives on criminological theories.
Submitting assignment on ilearn: Students can submit this assignment in written format through Microsoft word (the length of the paper is completely up to you). Or, students can simply upload a video of yourself responding to the assignment question. Again, there is no length requirement. Just be sure to bring your authenticity and express yourself accordingly.
The objective is to assess how you make meaning of crimes and construct your own beliefs and theories of crimes based on your own lived experiences. Talk from the “I” perspective and from the perspective of being Black/African American!!
