“My Side Of The Story” essay on the narrative of a selected villain from a Disney film

For this assignment, you should connect your arguments, observations, and analyses to the assigned course readings. This short discussion papers should reflect your critical observations and ideas about the reading assignments and films screened for class, and they should each include discussion and analysis of at least two course readings. Please remember to fully cite readings and films. All papers should use the MLA citation style. Each writing assignment is due on the dates noted below, by 11:59 pm on our canvas site. No late response essays can be accepted.

“My side of the story”: For this assignment, you should select a villain from one of the following films: Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Princess and the Frog, or Brave (please note that Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, and Mulan are not options for this assignment), and create a narrative about their side of the story. You have the freedom to be creative with this project—you can write an essay, a short story, a series of letters or diary entries, a comic book, create a short film, etc. The characters portrayed as villains in these films often occupy marginalized and/or 
deviant positions in the constructed Disney society. Your goal is to explore these “villains” in the context of course concepts regarding race, gender, sexuality, class, ability, empire, power and privilege. James Baldwin wrote, “No man [sic] is a villain in his own eyes.” If these characters could tell their past, their experiences, how they were treated, what would they say? How would they justify their actions? How would they explain their motivations? How did their experiences and/or identities contribute to their exile from their community, and their opposition to it? What would be their thoughts on the societies they have been alienated from? You should explore this character within the context of our course concepts, readings, and discussions. Also, realizing that other media have explored and re- interpreted some of these characters through film, television, writing, and visual art, please be careful to create your own ideas for this project, as relying on other’s ideas for this assignment is considered plagiarism.
