Like in previous units, there are two choices. The first two articles are on the newly negotiated USMCA trade agreement (the successor to NAFTA). Note that this agreement was negotiated in 2018, but was just ratified in early 2020. If you choose these articles, you should focus on the following:
a) What are the major changes to NAFTA that affect Mexico specifically?; (b) In what ways might the Mexican economy benefit from these changes?; (c) In what ways might these changes cause some new problems for the Mexican economy?
The second option is on the Brazilian President’s reaction to international criticism of his environmental policies, especially in regards to the forest fires in the Amazon which became international news last Summer and Fall. There are three articles on this topic. If you choose this topic, you should focus on the following:
(a) To the international critics of President Bolsonaro, what do they claim was causing these Amazon fires?; (b) Why did Bolsonaro reject European aid?; (c) the term “colonialism” has been thrown around a lot in regards to this issue, especially by President Bolsonaro – explain why.
