Pierce, Laurie, “Exploring The Experiences Of African American Nurses: An Emancipatory Inquiry” (2018). Theses and Dissertations. 2310.
This inquiry provided a critical and in-depth analysis of African American nurses’ situations within the context of the work environment. Through this examination, multiple oppressions were illuminated. The participants identified both personal experiences of oppression and oppression related to administrative and interdisciplinary hierarchies. Additionally, the participants provided their insights on the concept of empowerment. Definitions of empowerment included being a voice for self and others and empowering others is empowering to self. Thus, the concept of relational empowerment was explicated. Furthermore, the participants envisioned an ideal environment where administration is supportive of nurses, nurses have time to care for the patients, and the interdisciplinary team have open communication that allowed for holistic care of patients. The participants envisioned an ideal work environment where nurses’ voices were heard, and nurses had an active role in the development of policies and participated in staffing decisions. Open communication within the interdisciplinary team and respect from team members was emphasized. Lateral violence and incivility were eliminated in the participants’ ideal work environment. Finally, to align with the constructs of emancipatory research, praxis occurred through a discussion of how the participants conceived of creating change within the work environment. I would use this source as a personal connection to the nurses. This goes into detail and will also give more insight into the lack of diversity in the healthcare field. I would deem this source credible due to the fact there were multiple experiences from nurses.
“Exploring the 10 Percent: Why Black Nurses Are Imperative.” Detail | U of I, occrl.illinois.edu/our-products/voices-and-viewpoints-detail/current-topics/2019/10/10/exploring-the-10-percent-why-black-nurses-are-imperative.
This article elucidates how black nurses are crucial to the country and healthcare field at this time. It goes on to tell how patients are much more comfortable with nurses that are minorities due to the fact that there has been a mistrust between minorities and white doctors. black nurses are critical for providing black communities better health care. Compared to their white counterparts, they are more likely to practice in underserved areas that comprise a large percentage of black families and are more likely to accept patients who are covered by Medicaid. However, improving access to care is only one dimension of how they serve their community they also have been linked to improving the quality of care that African Americans receive. The article shares that black nurses can lessen the gaps in cultural competency, which many of their white coworkers cannot or will not do. Black nursing professionals provide an opportunity for communities of color to receive health care from people who look like and can relate to them. I would use this source to show that black nurses are needed more than it is shown, the lack of diversity can be detrimental to the healthcare field. Most people tend to want to accept help from others if it is their own skin tone. I would deem this source credible due to the fact that it came from research that a university conducted, and it had statistics. This source does not relate to the other source.
Iheduru-Anderson, Kechinyere C. “The White/Black Hierarchy Institutionalizes White Supremacy in Nursing and Nursing Leadership in the United States.” Journal of Professional Nursing, Jan. 2020. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1016/j.profnurs.2020.05.005.
African American nurses face racial barriers to career advancement in the U.S. There are previously identified factors such as discrimination against black nurses persist. Nursing leadership dynamics enforce White/black hierarchy in US nursing. White/black hierarchy starts in nursing school and persists into practice. However, nursing education plays a great role in eliminating the White/black hierarchy. I will use this source to also show how detrimental the lack of black/minority nurses are.

As nursing continues to advance health care in the 21st century, the current shift in demographics, coupled with the ongoing disparities in health care and health outcomes, will warrant our ongoing attention and action. As within all health professions, concerted efforts are needed to diversify the nation’s health-care workforce. The nursing profession in particular will be challenged to recruit and retain a culturally diverse workforce that mirrors the nation’s change in demographics. This increased need to enhance diversity in nursing is not new to the profession; however, the need to successfully address this issue has never been greater. This article discusses increasing the diversity in nursing and its importance in reducing health disparities. We highlight characteristics of successful recruitment and retention efforts targeting racial/ethnic minority nurses and conclude with recommendations to strengthen the development and evaluation of their contributions to eliminating health disparities. I will use this source to highlight the things that we can do to improve the way that diversity is handled, and it always sheds more light onto the lack of diversity. It is related to one of the sources.
