Overview of the Child Case Study Assignment
A Case Study can be used to study just one person and follow and record their development and behavior. Throughout the semester, you will create a case study journal of one fictitious child from conception through adolescence. You will be prompted and given directions to add to the journal of your “child” which will be used to show examples of developmental milestones, course theories, and key concepts through growth reports and short stories. This is a creative, critical thinking project that is a key component of the class. You are encouraged to use your notes, textbook, other resources, & ask the professor when you are unsure of what to write.
Directions for UNIT 5 Child Case Study Entries 41-50
41. At what age did your child begin puberty? What was your child’s height and weight at this age, and after their growth spurt? Describe the primary and secondary sex characteristics that developed during this time. Include the age of your child’s first menarche or spermarche.
42. Tell about a friend of your child’s who went through puberty either much earlier or much later than your friend. What struggles did this child face?
43. Your friends who also have teens complain that their children are lazy because they want to sleep until noon on weekends. Explain why their teens might not be “lazy” How much sleep should teens get and why is it so important?
44. Which stage of Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development will your child reach now that they are an adolescent? Describe how this stage is different than the concrete operational stage. How are they expected to use this higher-level thinking in high school?
45. You have noticed that your teen is becoming more argumentative, indecisive, and egocentric. Is this normal? Give a specific example that you have observed with your child and his/her friends that demonstrate the Imaginary Audience, Personal Fable, and Invincibility Fable. (this entry should be a little longer to describe all of this)
46. At their High School, you see some kids that your child was in school with since elementary school – some are doing well in school, some are doing poorly, and a few have dropped out. Using information from chapter 15, explain some factors that might explain why.
