PART FOUR OF ESSAY –

Research Paper Instructions:

You will be writing a 4-6 page argumentative research paper on the topic of your choice. However, your paper *MUST* discuss a topic related to a work of literature or an author you have encountered in English 1 A or 1 B. I may be willing to consider other arguable topics, also. Here is a list of possible topics to consider. You will need to gather, consult, and use a minimum of 6 outside sources (books, magazines, TED talks, documentaries, online articles, etc). Make sure you choose credible sources with varying viewpoints. As is customary for all English 1 portfolios, it is required that you:

Format your document according to MLA standards
Include a Works Cited page in MLA format (you need at least 6 sources for this paper; a list of url’s is not sufficient). Your Works Cited should be in alphabetical order.
It is also required that you integrate outside source material into your research paper – you will include a parenthetical, in-text citation in each instance.
Here is an example: “Ray Bohon, an officer for the NYPD, encourages citizens to observe others carefully so as to be prepared to give detailed descriptions of perpetrators” (Callan 57).

One additional requirement for this particular essay is to include a counter-argument. This is at least one paragraph that will be dedicated to acknowledging the opposing view and offering a rebuttal.
For example, if your argument is that video games are helpful to children (helps strengthen problem-solving abilities, enhances creativity, and allows children to socialize with friends on collaborative online games), then acknowledging the opposing view would be addressing the group of people who would NOT agree with you. The opposing viewpoint would be that video games are harmful, not helpful. You would need to address this viewpoint and offer a pushback. What could be said to address some of those concerns and win them over to your side?
