Five Traps of Interviewing and How to Avoid Them.

False reassurance provides false expectations for example for COVID patients right now telling them that they are going to be cured after the five doses of Remdesevir is inaccurate. Instead explaining that the medication helps with symptoms but also that every person response to treatment is different gives realistic expectations. Avoiding this is mainly by acquisition of knowledge and development of skills.
Use of authority often creates an ambient of insecurity, instead of making the patient understand the information and increasing their knowledge is more beneficial than creating a bridge. I would avoid this trap by creating a secure atmosphere and a more equal environment.
Talking too much or talking too fast limits the patient time to talk and as providers we need to let the patient talk, instead I would use open ended question to open the dialog and allow the patient to express needs and concerns.
Gestures can represent a barrier on communication. Often times the patient is ready to talk and a gesture can change the ambient in a second, instead giving a hand or if I am sitting in the patient’s rooms gives a signal that I am ready to listen. I would avoid gestures by learning how to become aware of my own gestures.
Eye contact is one of the more important tools of examination and provides an instrument for creating a trusting environment. If the provider is not looking at the patient, trust is not going to be build. I would avoid this by using every minute to look at the patient, especially when they are the ones asking questions and sharing information. If the provider is unable to build trust with the patient, the treatment has no purpose, he is never going to get better.

In conclusion, if we do not have good communication skills and are not aware of barriers that are related with culture, health literacy, or knowledge them our own practice is going to be limited and the provision of care is going to be incomplete.
