The final paper will look at how Power, Privilege, & Inequality can be viewed in the media that is an essential part of our everyday lives. Especially now, we have become immersed in the visual, auditory, and literary arts. Many of the shows, movies, vlogs that we watch, music we listen to, and the written works that we read can be analyzed through the many sociological lenses that we have discussed in our course. You can look at anything from movies, series, YouTube vloggers, social media influencers, music, the beauty industry, sports, etc. An example of how this is can be conducted is as follows (this is a course I am proposing to the AU to possible teach in the future). Remember this is pop culture. Not pop culture as a whole but….. A show, movie, a part of the music industry, beauty standards and influencers etc. etc. The draft doesn’t have to be a complete paper but I am requiring a complete thesis statement in the first paragraph. I need to see a title, intro, thesis and you can give me an outline for any remaining paragraphs you haven’t completed. Also, a complete reference page formatted in APA or ASA.
Part 1: The Structure of the Paper
What is the structure of my paper if I am essentially writing two papers (a lit review and the main body of my paper) and combining them?
1. Title Page (Page 1)
2. Abstract ( New Page/Page 2)
3. Intro
4. Main Body of Paper/Analysis (the largest section which applies theories, foundations, positive/negative of the aspect of pop culture you are referencing/analyzing.)
5. Conclusion
6. References
The Title Page: APA or ASA formatting https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa6_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html
Abstract: An APA abstract is a summary of your paper in 150–250 words. It describes the research problem, methods, results and conclusions of your research. For published papers, it also includes a list of keywords. Write the abstract after you have finished your paper, and place it on a separate page after the title page
Intro: Your intro will follow after abstract on the same page. Make sure there is at least two rows of spacing before starting your intro. The introduction should be captivating. You are setting a scene and essentially getting your audience excited for your paper. You will also include your thesis statement which is essential for guiding your reader as to what you are analyzing and how you will go about with your analysis.
Main Body of Paper/Analysis: The main section of your paper will be several pages long and this is where you will apply critical thinking and analysis to your paper. This is not a history lesson on your topic. I want you to think complexly about the pop culture reference you are analyzing and apply the sociological imagination to the topic. Use the foundations and theories discussed in our course for your analysis and apply them to the many areas of your topic that connect to the main theme of the course; Power, Privilege, and Inequality. I would also like you to look at how the pop cultural reference is either positive or negative as it projects a message outward into society and is possibly an influence on either society or a group within society.
Conclusion/Solutions: This is the end of the paper. Don’t end your paper on a flat note. Remind the audience what you just did in your analysis and why it is important to do so. What are some possible solutions to the problems you might have found or how can we take a message from whatever it is that you are referencing within your paper and help it flourish into something more substantial. The intro is the hook and the conclusion is your mic drop!
Reference Page: Nothing changes; APA or ASA format. You should be a pro at finding credible sources. Nothing more than 20 years old in publication unless you absolutely need some feminist article from the third wave in 1982… I will allow it. That was just an example but seriously, if it is a good article and it is older than me, just email me. I want no less than 10 credible, empirical, academic sources. You can use as many sources as you would like and there will be supplemental sources such as video links, links to articles, blogs, etc. You can use what you would like but there must be ten real sources. Remember more is more and less is a bore!
