Powerpoint presentation
Identify a social space of your choosing (workplace, classroom, store, coffee shop, online forum, etc.). Take notes about your observations of the physical and non-physical elements that make up the space. Examples of things to observe: the percentage of men to women employed, gender stratification seen in visual elements such as advertisements and posters, and gender imbalance in power structures. Analyze your observations. What impact do the various elements have on people of all genders? Why is the space set up the way it is? What is the targeted audience of the space?
Conduct scholarly research to identify theories and studies that support or contrast with the conclusions drawn from your observations. Discuss how your observations confirm or challenge the research you find.
Reflect on your own impressions of the space you analyzed. What observations did you make about stratification that were not related to gender?
Present your observations, research, and reflections in an engaging PowerPoint or other digital presentation format in class. Your PowerPoint Presentation may only contain photos and graphics/tables but your speaker’s notes will consist of your observations, notes, & other written details. Your presentation should be 7-10 slides in length.
