Primary Source Reflection
Instructions:
1. Please read the Grady document, then read the liberty, equality, and power document. For the liberty, equality and power document, please read CHAPTER 18 ONLY. Titled “A TRANSFORMED NATION: THE WEST AND THE NEW SOUTH, 1865–1900” pages 610-641.
The main objective is to place the primary source in its historical context. Important considerations include identification of author, discussion of the original community reading the document, analysis of the document, effect of the document(if it can be discerned). You need to place the Grady document in the context of the period.
There is also a sample Primary Source Reflection attached for reference.
Guidelines for the Primary Source Reflection:
1. Use the first paragraph to summarise the context within which the document is situated ( you will need to use the liberty equality power document)
2. The following page and a half should summarise the document, highlighting its most important points, and connecting any of these points to historical context.
3. If ascertainable, the final page should discuss how the document was received by contemporaries.
4. References should appear as thus (Murin, page), references to primary source (author’s last name, page)
