Production Critique

Production Critique Format

General Instructions: You will write a two to three page paper critiquing a live theatrical production. If one is offered by our Department of Fine Arts Theatre you may attend and critique that show. These papers should be double-spaced and in a font no larger than 12 point. As this is a college-level course, college-level academic writing is expected (i.e. grammar, spelling, and punctuation is evaluated). Your grade will be based on how well you demonstrate in writing that you saw in the production and by supporting your opinions with specific examples from the production. General statements will not suffice in either case. Please follow the format given below EXACTLY as it appears.

Production Critique
Theatre Appreciation (DRAM 1310)

The theatrical production that I chose to see was called “Twelfth Night “written by William Shakespeare. This play was shown at a smaller theatre called The Overtime Theater located at 5409 Bandera suite 205 in San Antonio. I was able to attend the March 7th showing at 8pm. I really enjoyed the more intimate seating that the overtime theatre offered. I was able to buy a last-minute ticket and still sit on the first row.
In my opinion, this play was extremely confusing. I do think that the message intended was lost in all of the different scenarios. The message is of romantic love and how finding and achieving such love can be challenging and sometimes even hurtful. I think that Shakespeare wanted to show the emotion of love and how it can move people to express their love for someone in very passionate ways. The many characters of the play and the frequent changes of the scenes were a little confusing to me, however I do think that Shakespeare succeeded in showing us his vision throughout the production.
There were several great actors and actresses in this production. The character of Viola was my absolute favorite.
