Assignment 4: Professional Writing Proposal
Proposals respond to a variety of questions, such as how can something be improved,
why is something a problem in the first place, what are viable solutions to the problem,
why is one solution better than others, what will it take to enact the best solution, who
will be affected by the solution, and how. As an example, there are a couple of
proposals in the Assignment 3 Folder along with a chapter about writing proposals.
For this assignment, you will create a proposal regarding a professional issue. First,
identify a job that would be your “dream job,” and imagine that you are working in the
profession. (This can be a job connected to your major or a different focus entirely i. e.
identify an area of interest in community, education, sports, etc. (See the proposal about
comic books as an example.) Then, do a bit of research to identify an “exigence,” which
is a problem or issue of concern, within that profession. will become your focus for your
proposal. Your proposal should address the following:
1. Define the exigence (problem) and solution.
2. Supply convincing arguments, with evidence to support the proposed solution.
This includes arguing why this is the best alternative.
3. Account for the feasibility of the proposed solution, including budget concerns
(expenditures involved and how they will be covered).
4. Defend the proposal from potential objections.
5. Provide good references for all information provided.
6. Engage the audience emotionally.
Remember, you are writing to other professionals in this field, so be sure to define that
audience, their values, concerns, knowledge of the topic, etc. in crafting the proposal.
Use information gathered through your research to identify different views on the issue
and to support your proposal. The proposal should be presented in a genre that reflects
your target professional audience’s expectations for format, source documentation, and
style.
