Quote analysis exercise

Quoting:
Quoting is an incredibly important skill that academic writers develop through practice. In this assignment, I would like you to take two passages from Nicholas Carr’s Is Google Making Us Stupidand analyze how he incorporates and uses sources. In simple terms, take two passages and write your observations about how Carr uses sources. Focus on the patterns. Avoid retelling the ideas and focus on tell us how it works. What does the author do? I expect to see two full paragraphs analyzing and discussing Carr’s quoting strategy.

There lots of ways to quote sources, but there is one tried and true pattern that is consistently effective. To make quotes function for your intended goal, consider these three steps.

Introduce the quote by referencing these elements.

Credibility- Mentioning credentials of the source helps build your own credibility. Who is the author and what credentials do they have in relation to the topic? . If you quote non-experts, then your audience will assume that you do not know a lot about the topic and that your position is uninformed.
Context– The context is the environment either of the whole work or the specific passage
Idea– Before readers get to the quote, if you give them the idea that they should get from the quote, then your audience will be perked to the significance of the quote and ready to absorb the quote.
Quote and/or paraphrase

Analyze the quote. Pick the parts of the quote/idea that have significance for the point you are making and bring it out into your explanation of the quote to the audience. Refer to specific details of the quote. It is your job to make the quote say what you want it to say to your audience in your words.
