Please find below a text that was written by my TA in another course about Reflection II where the recommendations apply to your assignment as well within the context of our course. Read it for an example of how to improve your critical reflection writing.
The text by C. Laurin (TA CMN 3104):
We thought it would be helpful to provide some recommendations on how to succeed in writing Reflections II:
While this assignment is a self-reflection, it still requires academic rigour. The reflection exercise is a pedological tool and not a personal diary. It is not enough to present generalities of your feelings and opinions. You must challenge yourself to understand terminologies and how you position yourself in the world.
To begin, perhaps a quick google search of the term self-reflection could provide some clarity:
Noun: meditation or serious thought about one’s character, actions, and motives. (Oxford Languages)
Noun: A person’s world view is the way they see and understand the world, especially regarding issues such as politics, philosophy, and religion. (Collins Dictionary)
Question 1 asked for you to situate yourself in the following:
Worldviews – what does this term mean? Once you understand what a worldview entails you can then present your worldviews with appropriate terminology.
Attitudes – what are your attitudes, are they directly influenced by your worldview? If so, how, if not why not?
Biases – what biases do your worldviews, attitudes, or others create?
Look up these terms to ensure that you can critically self-reflect then respond appropriately.
Example: I am primarily a liberal thinker; however, I do tend to lean conservative when it comes to the war on Martians. This presents a problem when I attempt to support the UN and yet do not want to include nations outside of our planet. (I am being lighthearted to make this comprehensible as each person has a right to their own worldviews, the point is, as you seriously self-reflect you are able to see and question why you think, live, or act the way you do.)
Other examples could be: I believe capitalistic organizations are ruining our planet along with my personal and mental wellbeing. The more I see, the more I want, this feeds my insecurities and I feel depressed, yet I buy even if I don’t need something and end up tossing perfectly good products to the curb and contribute to overproduction and waste. I am a conservative American and think gun ownership should be regulated because… I uphold bilingualism in Canada, but I can see now how this bias may… I disapprove of patriarchy because… I am an atheist and therefore am not swayed by… I am Japanese and see our nation as … My Acadian culture supports my notions of … I visit other countries because I believe education… As a white, cisgender male, my attitude towards … With my white settler biases, I often fail to… My politically conservative ideology…. My religious belief… I came to be a…
Question 2 asked you to evaluate how the elements of question 1 influenced your media consumption:
Example: As a liberal tending individual my media consumption leans towards media producers who are also more liberal. I watch CBC news and podcasts… As a conservative thinker, I follow similar minded media… As a feminist, my online gaming supports feminist worldviews with many … I used to follow the WWF but upon finding out that… I am an Instagram junkie and now I see that it is influenced my biases towards … I tend to go to the theater to see blockbusters because I support the …
Question 3: Course Expectations: What are your motivations for taking this course? As this course is one of many CMN electives, why have you chosen this course over others?
This is your personal motivation/opinion, but still requires you to provide a level of response fitting for grading. For example: It was one of many so I tossed a coin in the air. That may seem a simple way to choose, but in fact I have a hard time selecting which electives to take because the choices are so many/so limited/… I wanted a course on … but there was none this semester. I am thoroughly interested in media representations because…
The word ranges for a question, e.g. 200-250 words, are also pedological tools, they are used to aid you in learning how to write succulently, using terminology which is able to express your complex thoughts and arguments in an efficient and coherent manner. Such as terminology that you have been acquiring from the weekly lectures, readings, documentaries, etc…
This was your first reflection assignment; thus, the rubric was less strictly enforced and grading was more generous, the next reflection assignment will be graded with greater scrutiny on the depth of your reflections. Avoid telling the reader what the world is like and all the generalities of life (e.g. ‘In this day and age…’) and any other verbose statement that does not directly respond to the assigned reflection. Focus only on yourself when responding: your worldviews, your opinions, your biases, your media usage, not what other people think/believe/do. The reader knows what you have been assigned to write, hence, there is no need to repeat the question in your written response.
