Read and reflect on the three discussion prompts in Week 1. Then, respond to one of the prompts in Week 2. All topics for our discussion come from the “Reflection” sections of the module. Please also respond to at least one other person’s post on the topic they chose. I’m flexible–that is, if you want to contribute to more than one topic, it’s OK and terrific, in fact, although not mandatory by any means. The important thing is to have a good intellectual conversation here. Make sure that you also include the link to your own recorded story in your designated Story Circle (Exercise 1). Enjoy!
In case you need a reminder of the three reflection questions . . . the first asked you to reflect on the sharing of personal stories in your life, someone in your family, or someone you know who you felt was a good storyteller and why. The second related to the late Steve Jobs as a storyteller. What makes his stories memorable? What makes them powerful? And the third was about cultural appropriation. What is/are one or more guidelines that you plan to use in your telling that will ensure you can bring the benefits of sharing a cultural story with your listeners without causing harm in terms of cultural appropriation?
This week, I would like you to start by reading the Beamish & Beamish article which is interesting as it traces storytelling from its beginnings to the impact that technology has had on storytelling. I expect that in our discussions, you will reference when appropriate, articles I assign for reading. If possible and legal, I will provide articles in their entirety; otherwise, I will include the full citations which you can use to locate the article through SU Libraries using your SU ID or, if you are from another university, you will use your respective ID to access their databases. The accessibility factor of some articles, unfortunately, maybe low depending on the date of the article and when the PDF file was created. I also want to remind you that the readings that I assign in this course take the place of a textbook.
