Research Paper

This is a guideline that shows you what needs to be included in your final paper in order to get a satisfactory grade, and is also the criteria that I will be using when I grade the papers.

General Format

· The first page of the report is an APA style cover sheet, including a title and your name

· Page numbers and a running header (i.e. a short title at the top of the page) are included

· The font is normal, such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Helvetica, and 12-point size

· Margins, and any other stylistic elements are formatted appropriately for an APA paper

· APA section headings (e.g. Introduction, Methods, etc.) are included as appropriate Note: You do NOT need to write an abstract for this paper because it won’t be published

Introduction

· Includes a strong, clear, persuasive introduction of research topic and specific research question

· Contains a clear summary of past research, including appropriate in-text citations

· Specific hypothesis and prediction about outcomes of the current experiment are communicated

Methods

· Methods used to collect/enter data are clearly, completely and accurately explained

· The design and data collection procedure are explained in enough detail that a knowledgeable researcher could attempt to replicate the experiment

· The statistical test(s) used are identified, and the reasoning behind the test is explained

· Coding procedure and any other details that affect data entry or interpretation are clearly noted

Results

· The results are summarized making reference to the variables measured and the hypothesis

· Statistical tests are correctly applied, and reported in APA style in the text, including a clear and correct statement about the statistical significance of the results

· Results are accompanied by an appropriate graph, with an APA style figure legend

Discussion

· The meaning of the results relative to the hypothesis/prediction is discussed using clear academic language

· Limitations of the experiment, such as alternative explanations for the results or threats to validity/reliability are clearly identified and explained

· Areas for future research are suggested and supported by clear reasoning

References

· A reference section contains a list of all the articles or other sources used

· All sources cited in the text are included in the reference list

· All sources included in the references list are cited in the text

· At least three peer-reviewed sources are included as references

· Citations in the reference list are in APA format, including a DOI for online articles when available

General Writing and Communication

· The paper uses language that is appropriate for a college-level social sciences report

· The paper is written clearly and does not include confusing passages or ambiguous language

· All paragraphs are developed, and are college-level in length and content

· Any points made are supported with empirical evidence

· Paraphrasing, not direct quotes, are used to describe other researchers results or ideas

Other Requirements

· The paper should be submitted as a Word document. Do not submit other file types.

· The paper should be turned in by the deadline.

· The paper should not contain any plagiarism (e.g. no part of the paper should be copied from anywhere else, the whole thing should be written in your own words).
