1. Amanda is a complex character. For example, she is delusional and practical at the same time; She is a caring mother, but what she says and does sometimes hurts the mental health and future of her children. Analyze with examples from the play the different components of Amanda’s character and its impact on her children.
Suggested Structure:
Introduction – overview of the topic, thesis, 100 words
Body paragraphs – 4 to 6 body paragraphs, 150-200 words each
Conclusion – summary of main ideas, 100 words
Works cited – list of your sources
Requirements:
State your thesis clearly at the end of the introduction.
Use topic sentences to start your body paragraphs.
Analyze examples from the play to support your interpretation.
In each body essay, use one or two short quotes from the play to support your analysis. Use appropriate in-text citation format.
Incorporate comments from at least three secondary sources in relevant parts of the paper (See Assignments #7 and #8).
The paper should have a minimum of 1,000 words, excluding the works cited page.
Write a title for your essay.
Write a works cited page in MLA format, including the play and the required three secondary sources.
In-text Citation Format for Plays:
You need to quote from the play to support your analysis. Choose quotes that are short, concise, and to the point. Avoid long quotes unless absolutely necessary. When you quote from a character, use the following format:
In scene I, Amanda tells her daughter Laura, “Stay fresh and pretty! – It’s almost time for our gentlemen callers to start arriving” (Williams 754).
The parenthesis includes the author’s last name and the page number of the quotation from the play.
When you quote a conversation between two or three characters, use the following format:
After the conflict in Scene I over Tom’s table manners, Amanda and Tom have another conflict over the books Tom reads.
Tom. Yesterday, you confiscated my books. You had the nerve to –
Amanda. I took that horrible novel back to the library – yes! That hideous book by that insane Mr. Lawrence. I cannot control the output of diseased minds or people who cater to them. But I won’t allow such filth brought into my house. (Williams 758- 759)
Note that there are no quotations marks around the quoted conversation. Instead, use indentation to indicate that it’s quoted materials.
Verb Tenses
In general, when we describe the events from a story in a chronological order, we use the present tense. For example, After Amanda and Tom reach an agreement about a gentleman caller for Laura, Tom sets out to invite a colleague from his warehouse to dinner.
When we refer to a past event, we use the past tense. For example, Tom’s father abandoned the family a long time ago. Amanda claims that she was very popular when she was young.
Do not change verb tenses unless necessary. For example, the sentence, “When Tom goes to the movies, he felt he was able to enjoy adventures that he did not have in his life,” uses the present and past tenses, which is confusing. Instead, we should say, “When Tom goes to the movies, he feels he is able to enjoy adventures that he does not have in his life.”
