Task: A rhetorical analysis is a close examination of how an author uses word choice, form, supporting evidence, and rhetorical techniques to achieve a tone and purpose. For this assignment, you will compose a rhetorical analysis essay that identifies and analyzes the effectiveness of an author’s specific rhetorical strategies in one of the texts listed below. The essay must include a thesis statement that makes a claim.

“Serving in Florida” by Barbara Ehrenreich, p. 368

Additional Guidelines:

This essay should include an introduction that provides an overview of the text you plan to analyze and ends with a thesis statement that guides the organization of the essay.

Each body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that states the main idea of that paragraph.

Each paragraph should include supporting evidence that relates to the main idea of that paragraph.

Supporting evidence should be integrated using the quote sandwich format—signal phrase, quote, explanation.

Your essay should maintain an academic tone. Avoid statements such as “I think” or “I believe,” or “I feel as if.” Also avoid self-referential statements like “This essay will be about…,” “My first supporting detail is….,” and “This quote means….”
