It does not use cliché and trite phrasing like “back in the day,” “nowadays,” or “once upon a time.” Any acronyms or initialisms like OCCC are spelled out the first time like this: Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC). It only uses the acronym after introducing it this way.
It does not try to speak for the world in the essay by using phrases such as: “around the world” or “in the world.”
The writing is not too casual. It is written in complete sentences, does not use contractions, and explains any jargon or terms unfamiliar to the reader; It does not use slang.
None of the sentences begin with conjunctions. These include the words: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so.
It does not address the reader directly or announce what will happen anywhere in the essay. Here is one example: Next, we will talk about gun safety. Another example is: Let us talk about chemicals. It avoids stating, “In conclusion.”
The essay has a clear introductory paragraph without a thesis. The thesis is a delayed thesis.
Topic Sentences:
• Topic sentences must be written in the author’s own words. It should not be something from a source.
• Topic sentences cannot contain an in-text citation.
Claim:
• It has a composed claim statement that is arguable.
• Explicit or implied, the claim follows through on what it says.
Rogerian Argument:
• It has all parts of the Rogerian argument and they can be identified by drawing boxes around the paragraphs to which they belong,
• The parts are not introduced using the words: Problem Summary, Side A, Side B, Opposing Side, Side 1, Side 2,
Common Ground,Solutions, Conclusion, etc.
• Claims/Support that are not properly formatted in-text citations are written in the author’s own words.
• Every time the author makes a claim, she/he provides support directly for that claim.
• Sources are used to support the author’s ideas. The author’s ideas are not used to support the sources. In other words, the essay is mostly the author’s voice. It does not have mostly quotes and paraphrases and summaries from sources.
• The author avoids inflammatory language: ignorant, ridiculous, without understanding, outlandish, etc.
• The author demonstrates a balanced voice for both sides even when proposing solutions.
Transitions:
• Transition sentences move from the main idea of the paragraph, and they lead into the next main idea in the paragraph that follows.
• Transitions are in the author’s own words.
• Paragraphs cannot end OR begin with quotes or any other source.
All topic sentences do not have in-text citations or quotes. The topic sentences clearly indicate the focus of the paragraphs.
It does not make use of “block quoting.” The length of the essay does not justify the use of such a large amount of material that is not the author’s own.
The essay has a strong conclusion paragraph that provides a summary, clear delayed thesis, or both. It does not introduce a new idea.
The author walks the reader through her/his argumentative process and does not leave the reader in the dark.
