Task Description: Compose an evaluation/argument discussing the relevance from your perspective of the 1946 children’s Little Golden Books classic, Scuffy the Tugboat. Use the book itself and one other source, a Wall Street Journal editorial on luck, to be provided by your professor to develop your discussion. The editorial is attached here and posted separately in the folder as well.

Introduce the book.
State that the purpose of the paper is to evaluate the story’s relevance to the youth of the 21st century.
Summarize the book briefly so your audience knows the story.
State your overall judgment about the book in a clear statement. I wrote one that I would potentially use in my paper. You can use or adapt the sentence I provided or craft one of your own. My thesis sentence was this: While Scuffy’s adventure demonstrates bravery and curiosity, the story also illustrates disobedience rewarded with luck, the latter two a challenging pair of concepts to teach children.
Provide reasons why you believe the way you do about your thesis statement.
Bring up the subject of Scuffy’s luck somewhere in the discussion. Scuffy is rescued at the last possible moment. That is an extremely lucky result. Life does not always have deus ex machina moments, where we’re saved at the last second. That’s what essayist Bob Brody talks about at the end of his piece, remember? Just like Scuffy!
Then make a connection to the editorial in The Wall Street Journal. Make some connections that you will have to explain between Scuffy’s luck and Bob Brody’s ideas about luck.
Then mention some folks who might disagree with your thinking. You can speak in general about this or ask some other people you know what they think about the value of this book for today’s generation of kids — including you!
Wrap up with a conclusion with your ultimate decision about the value of this book.
