(1) why does this enslavement and trafficking persist, although they are illegal everywhere in the world today; and (2) are analogies to the historical practices we have studied accurate as history and helpful in public policy making and law enforcement?
Consider John Sutter’s article “Slavery’s Last Stronghold,” http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2012/03/world/mauritania.slaverys.last.stronghold/index.html, and Nellie Peyton’s news story “Activists Warn over Slavery as Mauritania Joins U.N. Human Rights Council.” Then type a paragraph or two answering each of the following questions:
1. When and how does Sutter state that slavery began in the land that would become Mauritania, and which ethnic group does he state traditionally has owned slaves?
2. List the six reasons that Sutter cites to explain why slavery persisted in Mauritania in 2012, and state why anti-slavery activists have said that “many slaves in Mauritania don’t understand that they are enslaved[.]” How would you remedy these beliefs?
3. List the two steps that Bouboucar Messaoud and Abdel Nasser Ould Ethmane outlined for fighting slavery in Mauritania, and state, whether you believe that their plan will succeed as long as the current government described in these two articles, remains in power.
