Self assignment in Healthcare Administration portfolio

I have always been interested in Administration field since the time I was applying for College back in my home country.

I was accepted in both Universities that I applied for Medical Laboratory Technologist and Business Administration .The two careers that I really like it.

I made the decision to studied MLT, my father was a Doctor and we were planning to open a clinic to eventually work together. Unfortunately, right before I started college my father tragically passed away. Although this was a very difficult time in my life, I manage to pull myself together, work hard and graduate.

During early 2001, I moved to United States and began looking for work related to my profession. I took Medical Assistant program to acquire more knowledge in Medical field in this country. After finish the program I worked for a private lab who provided services for the Bergen Community Action as a Phlebotomist and Medical technologist , then eventually started working for Medlab Laboratory as a Medical Laboratory Technologist for which I been employed for the last 16 years. As my career progressed, I felt that it was more that I could do instead to be behind of scenes running and analyzing test, something was missing and wanted to pursue a graduate degree in the United States.

I have always enjoy my work at the Laboratory, playing a group leader role for the Hematology department for many years and now as part of the Clintox department that made me consider that is highly possible to combine both careers.

Right now healthcare has high demand of people who lead the industry. In my workplace there are always opportunities open for people with skills to manage different areas in the Laboratory. This was another reason that made me look forward for another level in my career.

Through the program I gained an understanding of concepts, theories and practices of effective leadership, learning new skills that could be applied to the different positions available no only in the company where I currently work for but also in other healthcare sector.

Right now I’m looking to transition from been a Laboratory Scientist to Laboratory Supervisor and/ or Manager in order to gain the experience which could be the starting point for new opportunities to reach a professional grow.

Being a person that always likes to help other people I’m working also as a volunteer for BVMI ( Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative) a non-profit organization and my experience there have served to strength my belief this is a right choice for me.

Healthcare systems are in need of change and I belief healthcare leaders are responsible of it, some of this changes start with education and prevention to make a huge difference and improve people’s lives. With the different options this master offers to work in different environments I hope I will be able to utilize my skills to enhance patient experience in many different ways, in or outside the laboratory and be more productive and valuable for the organization where I will work for.
