Short Essay III Instructions…….

For you forth short essay, you will produce an informational process essay that deals with food. The essay can be informal and reflective (like our reading for this week), or formal and expository (e.g. an essay on the coffee roasting process). They can also come from a first-person perspective (informal) or take a third person voice (formal). The main thing I’m looking for here is clear evidence that you understand how to produce a solid informational process analysis.

ENG 1510: Composition I

Summer 2020

Rhetorical Modes

The term refers to a series of conventional ways to structure your writing when you have a specific rhetorical goal in mind.

Review the chart in last week’s presentation to get a better sense of this.

So far, we’ve covered NARRATIVE and COMPARISON & CONTRAST.

This week we’ll take a look at PROCESS ANALYSIS.

Process Analysis

One of the most common things we do as writers is explain to our readers how or why something is done.

This can be something as simple as giving straightforward directions for making apple pie or as complex as explaining how the Hadron Supercollider works.

In either case, our readers are interested in learning about the process.

Process Analysis

Two types of process writing

Directional

Informational

Process Analysis

Two types of process writing

Directional

In this type of writing, you’re providing readers with a set of directions, with the assumption they will attempt the task at some point.

As such, your voice is the voice of authority, and you should write with the understanding you are directly addressing the reader.

Informational

Two types of process writing

Directional

Informational

This type of writing assumes that the reader is interested in the process because the process is interesting or timely.

In this case, your voice is no longer the voice of authority, but that of a trusted reporter.

Your ethos is based either on direct experience or on professional credentials (a journalist, an academic researcher, etc.)

Unlike directional process writing, your goal here is to enlighten the reader who wants to better understand how the impeachment process works, how birds know how to return to the same winter nesting spot, or how Coca Cola became the dominant soft-drink brand in the world.

Process Analysis

Every process analysis, regardless of the type, must have several key elements:

Process Analysis

Every process analysis, regardless of the type, must have several key elements:

An overview that introduces the reader to the process, its scope, and its relevance/importance

A discussion of specialized terms. This can be in an independent section or integrated into the discussion of theprocess

Present in steps in sequential order, making sure that you do not omit or reverse steps. You should also pay attention to those steps-within-steps.

Support your discussion with examples. This can include anecdotes, possible variations or alternatives to the process you’re laying out, or comparisons to other similar processes (e.g. the difference between making bread dough and pastry dough).

An endpoint. In a directional essay, this should be a discussion of what the end result of the process should look like. In the instructional essay, the endpoint can be more reflective (e.g. you can take stock in the significance of what you learned) or predictive (e.g. what are the possible outcomes).
