SOC 345 Variables in the General Social Survey
Instructions:
Use the GSS Data Explorer (https://gssdataexplorer.norc.org/variables/vfilter) to complete the above worksheet. You can open the worksheet in Google Docs or download it as a Microsoft Word file.
The lab consists of three parts. In the first section of part 1, you should look up the variable in the first column the GSS. You should identify the question text, variable type, and levels or range for the variable. For example, if you search in the GSS for “age,” you’ll see the variable “age” which has the question text “Respondent’s Age.” It is a numeric variable with a range of 18 – 88 years.
In the next section of part 1, you should search in the GSS for a variable related to the topic on the left. You only need to provide the code of the variable.
In part 2, you should use any of the categorical variables from part 1 to write three research questions. Your research question should consist of a relationship between an explanatory variable and a response variable. Below your question, identify the codes of your explanatory and response variables. For example, the research question “Does tv watching increase or decrease with age” asks if there is a relationship between age (my explanatory variable) and tvhrs (my response variable). Upload your completed lab as a Word document or PDF.
