Instead of taking a final exam, you will write a 1,000-1,500 word, double-spaced paper examining a fictional society. I would like you to select a fictional society you are familiar with, and ideally are a fan of (some examples might include Hogwarts, the Rebel Alliance/Galactic Empire, Middle Earth, Sunnydale, the 13 Districts of Panem, the hidden leaf village, . . .) To open your paper, you should first name and discuss the fictional society you select. Then, to analyze it sociologically, you must discuss:
Who is the dominant cultural group in this society? Who constitutes this group? What are their core values? Is there/are there noteworthy subculture(s)? Counterculture(s)?
What are the central norms to this society? What are the most effective forms of social control? Is there formal and/or informal sanctioning? How common is deviance? How do members respond to deviance?
What is the power structure of this society? Who is in charge and how do they earn their power? Is the power illegitimate or legitimate?
How is the society organized? What are the central institutions? How are these institutions situated?
How does social change occur? How frequent is social change? When change occurs, is it usually small or large scale?
To conclude your paper, make sure to discuss how this sociological analysis affected your fandom of the fictional society.
