Stage Model of Group Dynamics

Referencing the models of Tuckman and Garland et al., reflect back upon the development of or participation in a group (self-help or otherwise), club, team (athletic team or work team) you have been involved in and address the following:
1. Briefly address questions 1, 2, and 5 from the list below.
2. Describe specific events in the history of the group that might illustrate the periods during which it (the group) was: Forming (Pre-affiliation), Storming (Power & Control), Norming (Intimacy), Performing (Differentiation), and Adjourning (Separation).
a. How did this group handle Tuckman’s Theory when working through tension, solving problems, resolving conflicts, and working on goals?
b. How did the group end (if it did)?
c. What feelings or attitudes, negative or positive, did it leave you with?
3. When looking at the leadership of your group address questions 7, 8, and 9 (below) concerning the effectiveness of the leadership – did these things happen?

Before beginning a new group or leading an existing one, a human service worker must ask and try to answer several basic questions:
1) Why is the group needed?
2) What is the goal(s) of the group?
3) What natural phases is the group likely to pass through to reach the goal(s)?
4) Who should be in this particular group?
5) What are the characteristics of the members?
6) Where will the group meet?
7) What activities and structure will need to be in place to help the group work towards its goal?
8) What feedback mechanisms are needed to keep the group on track?
9) What leaderships skills will be necessary during each phase of the group’s progress?
