Value: 300 points
Word count: 1,000 words or more (titles above intro, intro, body paragraphs, and close)
THIS PAPER SHOULD SHOW YOUR BEST WORK OF THE SEMESTER AND CAREFUL ATTENTION TO DETAIL. Make every effort to avoid errors you have made in the other papers.
Paper 5 is a “make or break paper” at 300 points.
The state course is designed to put the most weigh on the last major paper with primary research (short story) and secondary (library database article) research.
Our last paper, Paper 6, is a 50-point timed poetry essay.
Check your grade average by going to the Grades tab to see where you are in the course.
Think of what you need to do to stay where you are if you are satisfied with your grade or what you can do to improve your grade.
Think of this paper being the same weight at three 100-point papers. It can make a tremendous difference in your final grade for the course.
Paper 5 Process and Requirements
This is how your paper will be assessed.
Paper 5 focuses on your analysis of a character’s major trait or a main theme in one of the listed short story readings. See the options in the module or click quick link: Short Story Readings and check the individual items in the module for each story.
In Draft 5A, you will propose a thesis statement and chose 4 quotes to explore.
Check your 5A feedback in the Grades tab with the 5A item. Make improvements before you submit 5B.
In Draft 5B, you will draft a 1,000 word essay with titles, intro, 4 body paragraphs, lots of quoting from the short story to show your primary research and support your points and a close. Check your 5B feedback in the Grades tab with the 5B item. Make improvements before you do the complete draft.
In 5C, you are submitting your required library database source and showing your research steps. This is just like you did for 4C. Check your 4C feedback in the Assignments dropbox or the grade item to see if anything needs attention for 5C.
For the complete draft, you will add a cover page, outline, essay with lots of support from the story (quotes), 2 quotes from a library database source, and a works cited page with the story and the library source alphabetized. Check your final Paper 4 for any items that need attention in this higher value Paper 5. See your feedback in the Assignments dropbox or with the grade item. Check the “Other Considerations” section of the Paper 5 module for the cover page, outline, and works cited.
See the Writing about Literature and Grammar Resources modules. Especially review the resources if you have been asked to check in your feedback for Paper 4 and 5A and 5B.
The final paper will include the following.
Cover page
Outline
Titles above intro
Introduction paragraph with thesis underlined at end
4 body paragraphs or more
lots of direct quotes to show you have researched the primary source (the story) and supported your points (this is the heart of your essay)
properly introduced quotes, correct quote insertion, & correct citing
highlight the quotes from the short story in yellow (just the quotes, not the introductions to the quotes or the cites) or color text purple
highlight the 2 quotes from the library database source in another easy-to-see-through color (not the intro or cites, just the quotes)
Highlighting makes your quotes pop, so you can check them with the original work for accuracy and see how much primary support you have. It also shows you have at least 2 library source quotes. Coloring them also helps you check for accuracy.
conclusion
