Synthesis Definition essay

Write a clear, thoughtful, and well-developed synthesis essay (1250 words minimum), using the sources listed below to explain the role parental and/or institutional “authority” should play in shaping, nurturing, developing, protecting, or guiding the growth of the individual self. Though the definition is your opinion, it must respond to and incorporate examples from the source essays.
Begin your essay with a brief, preliminary definition of the concept in your introduction – not a dictionary definition, but a personal definition of what authority means to you. How has your family and upbringing influenced your sense of authority? What have been the positive or negative influences? Which factors do you think have been most important?
Then look at what the sources have to say about the role of authority in relation to the individual. How well does your definition apply to the experiences of others? Do they change or expand your understanding of the concept in some way? In the essays that you have read for this assignment (the sources listed below), how did the authors conform to, rebel against, or in some other way respond to the expectations and values of their family, friends, community, etc.? To what degree are we individuals of our own making, and to what degree are we products of the influences imposed by our environment? Use examples from the essays to support your new “synthesis definition” of authority, and explain what you think is the significance of this concept.Thesis/Working Definition: Read the essays several times, using the engaged reading strategies in EmpoWord Appendix B. Consider what the parts are contributing to the whole text, and how each essay relates to the theme of the individual and authority. Try to articulate this relationship as a working thesis—a statement of your interpretation and response to the essays, which you will likely revise in some way or another. Your thesis should advance an interpretation of the essays that will help your audience understand your definition of authority, and show its relevance to the human experience. Quotations, Citations, & Sources: You must cite the essays as sources in the introduction, and include them in your Works Cited list (see MLA Citation and OWL MLA in the module). Quotes should be short (less than three lines each in your text). Avoid plagiarism! When you quote, write exactly what is written in the essay, without using your own words. Remember that you must interpret or explain each quotation or example and show how it helps to support the point you are making.
