Between social media and general media bias, learning how to navigate information and analyze what we read are skills that have become increasingly more important. Far too often, we find ourselves sharing and repeating information we come across without a second thought. This essay is designed to give you the skills to break apart an argument and determine if what we are reading is objective and fair or not. This will be important not only as we begin considering how to support our own opinions and ideas – for this class, but also in our daily lives.

Your essay will contain several parts: a brief summary of the article, a detailed paragraph identifying and analyzing the article’s Rhetorical Situation, a minimum of three paragraphs providing an in-depth ad detailed analysis of the article’s use of the Rhetorical Appeals using multiple examples from the text, followed by a conclusion which evaluates the author’s success or failure in creating and supporting an argument. NOTE: It is important that you remain objective when analyzing the article you have selected. You are not writing whether or not you AGREE with the author’s argument…that is irrelevant to the assignment. You are only focusing on writing an objective analysis of the argument itself. To put it simply, your opinion on the topic/argument in the article is irrelevant here.
