Hints:
Try to focus on a single point or a few closely related points in order to give your analysis thematic unity!
Please DO NOT recap the film’s premise. Assume your reader (me!) knows the film well and get right to your reading of the scene!
The value of using particular film terms in your analysis is building ethos; proving to the reader that you understand the visual rhetoric of film. It’s not necessary to memorize these terms, but using them correctly and effectively will strengthen your ethos as the writer!
Consider how the formal elements & decisions (directorial, performances, casting et al.) communicate the gender politics of the film.
Possible Thematic / Formal Considerations:
How does the camera move? Where does its eye rest? How are men and women filmed differently?
How does it frame violence, sex, danger?
What qualities and characters does the film seem to preference (screen time, framing, narrative development) with regard to masculinity and gender performances?
How do the roles of the male characters contrast with the roles of the female characters in the film?
What purposes do specific characters seem to serve?
What do the gender roles of specific characters in the film seem to convey about the film’s constructions of gender identity?
In the composition of your essay, you should use:
2 direct quotes from the scene in which you have chosen to evaluate, properly cited parenthetically, and perform a close reading of the visual rhetoric of the film.
2 direct quotes from one of the following Peer-reviewed academic journal articles that you should have read for the class. The objective is connect the research and statistics about Masculinity to the rhetoric of the film. You should synthesize the information in the context of your own arguments, not merely report the data. Use the data to prove/support/nuance your reading of the film!
