The purpose of this REVIEW PAPER is to introduce students of General Biology to the art of literature survey and scientific writing. It aims to succinctly review recent progress in a particular topic. Overall, this paper should summarize the current state of knowledge of a chosen topic. It should create an understanding of the topic for the reader by discussing the findings presented in recent research papers. A review paper is not a “term paper” or book report. It is not merely a report on some references you found. Instead, a review paper synthesizes the results from several primary literature papers to produce a coherent argument about a topic or focused description of a field. The paper will be evaluated on the bases of substance, adherence to instructions, avoidance of plagiarism and style as indicated in the syllabus. The title 1. Must be chosen carefully from topics provided on a FIRST COME FIRST SERVED basis. The development of the titles was guided by the course syllabus and must answer well-defined question(s). For example, how come HIV is such a dreaded virus? A possible title that could answer this question would be “The Interactions of HIV and Human Cells” and this could be a title. NOTE THAT THE CHOSEN TITLE MAY NOT BE CHANGED OR MODIFIED 2. Should be accompanied by a one half-page synopsis of the scope and substance. Five points will be earned when this is done correctly the first time. 3. Must not deal directly with the symptoms and cures of human diseases (As we are still doing Biology as a basic Science).The paper and the Layout Sample of General Layout Title: “The Interactions of HIV and Human Cells” Outline I. Should be a review, 8 numbered pages long (i.e. including LITERATURE CITED). A title page and a table of contents must be included. These are not part of the 8 pages. 2. MUST BE TYPED, double spaced with 12 points font size and 1-inch margins and must not be “right justified” 3. Scientific names of microorganisms, plants, and animals must be italicized and written in accordance with the binomial system of nomenclature 4. Please see the sample layout above 5. Page numbers (pagination) must be inserted. 6. The due date is on or before Friday, November 6, 2020. A maximum of 95% will be earned for this exercise. The research materials 1. Should not be older than 6 years (i.e. 2015 till 2020 inclusive). 2. Should be preferably PEER-REVIEWED JOURNAL ARTICLES. All utilized articles must be paraphrased (i.e. explained in your own words) to avoid plagiarism. 3. Should never be adopted internet articles meant for general public information since these are not peer-reviewed and cannot be authenticated. 4. ALL MATERIALS MUST have a recognizable author(s) name(s) cited within 5. Could be textbooks WHICH WOULD BE USED FOR BACKGROUND INFORMATION. If textbooks are used, no more than one of them may be cited in-text or listed in the literature cited section. 6. Dictionaries are not scientific research materials and are not acceptable. 7. Should never include press reports or historical narratives (Newspapers and magazines). 8. Religious books are NOT ACCEPTED 9. At least eight (8) reference materials must be consulted and listed accordingly in the Literature Cited section.
